‘This is a tragedy’: ‘This could have been us’
New York magazine says its story about a California teacher who was accused of having sex with a 15-year-old boy while on vacation in the Dominican Republic was “an important one.”
The story, written by Amy Goldstein, features a portrait of the teacher who is quoted in the article, and also interviews other women who have been victims of sexual abuse.
“The thing that is striking about this story is that it’s not just a story about sexual abuse,” the article says.
“It’s a story of a teacher who had a sexual relationship with a student and was not just sexually molested, but the abuse was sexualized, the students were told that this teacher had committed the crime, and that the teacher had to go to prison.
And this teacher’s story, which was told over and over again by the school district, was that she was doing the right thing.”
Goldstein, who is an associate professor of journalism at NYU, said she was “truly stunned” by the story.
“This could’ve been us,” she said.
The article includes the names of three former students and one former teacher who told Goldstein that the district was doing all it could to stop the teacher from going to prison, and the names and photographs of three other former students who corroborated the stories. “
And we need to make sure that the schools that are supposed to be protecting kids are doing the very things that the school has been saying they’re not.”

The story does not name the school or any other victims.
“Our aim here is to highlight the important work being done to protect students and make sure this doesn’t happen again,” Goldstein said in a statement.
“In the end, the story is not just about the teacher, it’s about the students and their families and our commitment to make the community safer.”
In a statement, a spokesman for the district said that the students in the story were not identified because of privacy laws.
“While we have not been able to reach out to the school, it is clear that these stories were important to the students,” said Matthew Pappas, a spokesperson for the city’s Office of Education.
As the city continues to work with the district to address the issues that led to the teacher’s departure from school, we will continue to work together with the school to address any further concerns.”
