How much do I owe in a car accident?
A man in Chicago says he owes $8,000 to the car dealership for a car he drove into a ditch and then into a lake, then into another ditch.
The man, who is also his father, said he didn’t think twice about it.
“I thought that was normal,” said the father, who lives in the Chicago area.
“I don’t think I’d be here right now, so I wasn’t thinking about that.”
The incident happened in the town of La Grange on June 15.
A passerby noticed the vehicle, a red Dodge Charger, on a ditch about 30 minutes after the accident.
He called 911.
Police said they didn’t find any injuries.
The father said the dealership refused to pay him.
He called the dealership and said he wanted to cancel the loan, but they said he was under contract and he owed money.
The dealership said it couldn’t honor the loan because he was a customer, but the father said he’d already paid off the debt.
The family says they were told they owed $837.26 by June 30.
The dad has since received a $2,500 bill from the dealership.
