More than 20 people have been killed in the last 24 hours as the death toll in the worst mass shooting in Australia’s history rose to 18.
The incident in Melbourne has now been classified as an incident involving a firearm.
The gunman was identified as a 26-year-old man from the southern suburbs of Perth.
His wife, who was also a student, was shot in the chest and is in a serious condition in hospital, and her teenage daughter, also a University of Western Australia student, is in serious condition.
It is understood she was taken to hospital after she was shot.
Witnesses have told ABC Radio Melbourne that the gunman was dressed in a black hoodie and gloves.
A man who witnessed the shooting described it as a “very intense and scary” situation.
Police said it appeared the gunman had been armed with a rifle.
“We are not sure of his motive but we are concerned about his safety,” Acting Superintendent Mick Jones said.
